2014 Cohort Begins Closing Achievement Gaps and Increasing Student Success

Last week, the Achieving the Dream 2014 Cohort's Kickoff Institute in Charlotte, NC welcomed 12 community and technical colleges from eight states. This cohort, serving nearly 85,000 students, began the challenging work of identifying and implementing evidence-based strategies for closing achievement gaps and increasing student retention, persistence, and completion rates.

The final keynote speaker was Dr. Steven Murray, Chancellor of Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas. Dr. Murray gave an excellent presentation where he told the story of PCCUA through to the present day in an engaging and funny way. Through the story of PCCUA's Achieving the Dream journey, Dr. Murray provides tips, best practices, and personal examples of achieving institutional change.  PCCUA's story is similar to the story of many other community colleges in a variety of ways, but the real lessons he noted have come from their Achieving the Dream work.  Enjoy the presentation.
