Defining Our Commitment to Equity: Introducing ATD's New Equity Statement

Since its founding, Achieving the Dream has been a strong and vocal advocate for access and equity. We believe all individuals have the right to a high quality education in an inclusive environment. Access to and equitable treatment in America’s system of public education – from preschool through community college and four-year institutions – are cornerstones of a strong democracy and a skilled, competitive workforce.

For the past six months, Achieving the Dream has been engaged in an intensive effort to create a statement that clearly communicates our fundamental commitment to equity.  Staff at all levels of the organization have contributed to the statement. Coaches and representatives of network colleges read drafts and offered their thoughts.

Now I'm pleased to share it with you. We encourage you to make it widely available so your community and partners understand what brings us together and drives our work.

We’re ready to move forward to make the equity statement actionable. Our coaching model will be aligned with the seven capacities, including equity, to help network colleges lay the groundwork for success with pathways and other large-scale transformative work. Coaches will work with colleges to put in place equity-minded structures and processes. We’ll also be creating resources like an equity toolkit for ATD colleges, strengthening our knowledge base around minority-serving institutions, and expanding our network of equity-related partnerships.

Please let us know what would be helpful to you as we build out our equity-focused services and support, or if you would be interested in further advising ATD on the development of our equity work. We appreciate your input.
