Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses. SI is a non-remedial approach to learning enrichment that increases student performance and retention. SI offers regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions to all students enrolled in a targeted course. SI study sessions are informal sessions in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills. The SI sessions are facilitated by “SI leaders," students who have previously and successfully completed the targeted course. SI leaders attend all class lectures, take notes, and act as model students for their classmates.
At El Centro College, this intervention provides students with an additional resources (focused on content in specific courses) to increase course completion with a grade of C or higher. Students are provided opportunities to work collaboratively with classmates and build a sense of connectedness within a study group. Since its inception, we have continually increased the number of courses that provide Supplemental Instruction support. With data analysis and evidence-based practices we have grown our program to extend SI support to additional courses such as ESOL and other STEM based courses. The identification, development, implementation, and continuous evaluation of this intervention has increased the success of under-prepared students and through appropriate collaborative learning strategies increase student learning in targeted courses. Currently, of the courses that have SI support, there is a 43% participation rate with an 80% success rate of those students who attend SI sessions.
