The Harbor Advantage is a prescriptive approach to student success that guaranteed new incoming students and continuing students with fewer than 10 units a full-schedule of classes in Fall 2014 and Spring 2015, including math, English, a success course, and a general education course in the students chosen area of interest/major. A total of 265 students participated in Harbor Advantage in this first year. In the 2015-2016 academic year, we are recruiting 400 students.
Harbor Advantage was created from our initial first year experience program in which 100 students participated in fall 2013. Harbor Advantage term-to-term persistence (fall 2014 to spring 2015) was 85.5%, 15% higher than first-time in college students not enrolled in the program.Successful course completion for Harbor Advantage students was 70% compared to 62% for non HA students. In addition, the average units completed for HA students for fall 2014 was 9.86 compared to 6.82 for non HA students.
Research in community college education clearly points out that student success increases when students are provided a prescriptive pathway for success in their college career. The Harbor Advantage provides key elements in this pathway, including: a significant connection with a person at Harbor College; mandatory orientation, assessment, advisement, and educational plans; a mandatory program of study based on their area of interest/major; and monitoring progress throughout the first term to assure a successful transition to college with immediate interventions as needed.
