College Survival & Success Course

KCC’s 3-credit College Success Course (CGS) continues to be a required part of nearly every degree option on campus.  This year, building on a pilot program from last year, the scope of this program grew to include a new 1-credit CGS 110 class targeted towards recent GED completers and students coming directly from high school.  CGS 110 is designed to teach students the critical skill of navigating campus systems towards success - particularly on-line systems for resources, support, and the acquisition of technology skills required to be a successful college graduate and 21st century employee. Approximately 200 high school 5th year seniors participated in the CGS 110 pilot in the fall of 2015 and this year this group will expand to include Oregon’s new “Oregon Promise” students.  This new and additional CGS course is an important part of KCC’s First Year Experience (FYE) which requires new students to take CGS 110, participate in mandatory advising each term, and attend at least one cohort educational event each term. We believe this combination and structure, with close oversight from staff, will further increase KCC student retention and success.
