Supplemental Instruction (SI)

At NECC, Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets gateway courses. SI provides two hours each week of regularly scheduled study sessions for all students enrolled in a class. The significant feature of SI is the use of “SI leaders," students who have previously successfully completed the course. SI leaders attend all classes and act as model students for their classmates. They lead the SI study sessions, informal seminars in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations.


NECC’s goal for SI is to increase course-completion rates (CCR) in high-enrollment developmental and gateway courses that typically have high-failure/low-completion rates. Over 6 years, SI sections have usually produced better CCRs than non-SI sections; this is particularly evident in Math. An analysis of CCR data for 2010-2014 indicated that SI has been most consistently beneficial as an academic support for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classes. During the 2014-2015 academic year, a data-review team concluded that SI-program participation at NECC should be restricted to STEM classes; this approach was implemented in the fall 2015 semester.
