College Success Seminar (FYE 101) and Academic Coaching

Development of a three-credit college success course (FYE101) based on the On Course textbook by Skip Downing. The annual offering of the On Course workshop has also become an important part of this and the professional development intervention.  College Success Seminar intervention has expanded to include several course offerings intended to reach out to students to assist them with the development of skills necessary for success at the college level and beyond.  Efforts include courses in college readiness, study skills, career exploration as well as the development of an Acadmic Coach focused on helping students develop vision and purpose.

2015-2016 First Year Experience Activities

  • Offering of  FYE 103 (career exploration) using Open Educational Resources
  • Career Advising Training – Strong Interest Inventory
  • Expansion of career advising to TRiO staff
  • Offering of FYE 101 on two high school campuses

Goals for 2016-17

  • Development of relationship with local high schools for additional offerings as a part of Early College efforts.  Includes course offerings as well as an academic and career preparation program.
  • Leverage of career advising training within Academic Coaching and Academic Support as well as in FYE 103 Career Exploration course.
  • Communicate career advising model to students and institution
  • Align career advising model to Guided Pathways initiative
