Early Alert System

In an effort to catch students who were struggling before it was too late to help them, Martin decided to put an early alert system in place. The students at Martin have many needs and have many challenges to being successful in college. Many of them are first generation college students, have a low socio-economic status, are parents, and hold jobs. They struggle with ancillary issues such as transportation and childcare. While Martin cannot meet every need that every student has, if there are issues that can be helped, we wanted to know about it.

Using Completion by Design grant funds, Martin hired a Student Success Specialist. The instructors identified students who were struggling. The struggles could be with grades, attendance, or even personal. They then gave the name of the student to the specialist and he contacted the student to see what the issues were and what could be done to help. Not only are some students receiving the help they need, but it also fosters a climate of helpfulness.
