Faculty Professional Development

Our college has no formal professional development program in place, and although we do have a Center for Teaching and Learning and administrative support for professional development, financial resources are always an issue.

Our efforts to improve PD and to increase participation in PD began in 2012, when we sent a short, electronic survey to all full and part-time faculty members to gain a sense of what types of professional development they value and what types of experiences they would most likely attend.

In 2013-2014, the newly developed Professional Development Committee (PDCom for short) met monthly to develop goals and a more comprehensive survey was sent to all full and part-time faculty members again in April 2013. The response rate was excellent and we determined from the results that teaching faculty have various and multiple needs.

In 2014-2015, in response to the feeling the faculty should be somewhat responsible for defining their own professional development goals, three groups of eight to ten volunteers (about half of them adjunct faculty) intended to meet informally at the start and end of winter semester to complete and discuss their professional developement needs and goals. They used an inventory tool developed by the PDCom. It was a flop. Faculty don't do optional.

In 2015-2016, the college hired a new Coordinator for the Center for Teaching and Learning, who developed a New Faculty Orientation, which required new full-time faculty to meet weekly for pedagogy workshops and to attend meetings of important campus bodies (Academic Affairs Council, Department Chairpersons, Student Services, etc). The program was a hit - so much so that it will epand to include part-time instructors as well as any new-ish instructors from the past 5 years.
