MyAlert (Early intervention)

Early Alert (or MyAlert) is an early intervention and retention initiative providing outreach, support, and referral for at-risk students. Faculty are encouraged to refer struggling students to this voluntary support program. Once referred, students are contacted by a staff member in order to plan for and implement positive change for student success.

The College’s Early Alert intervention program had some challenges this year.  A midyear software conversion created some technology challenges with both the referral and tracking processes. However, the program still captured 465 referrals.  Of the referrals, 237 (or 51%) students responded to our outreach efforts and received some form of intervention.  Intervention is provided in terms of: Referrals to services on campus and off, Encouragement and support, Process information (pass/no credit, drop a class, financial aid), Referral to off campus supports, and Personal counseling (LPC’s only).

Our program has proven effective by increasing not only student success in courses, but increasing persistence and retention for the intervention groups. Opportunities for improvement lie with increasing the number of referrals, the number of faculty who use the system, and increase in responses to outreach.  We have had a slight decrease in the effectiveness of our outreach, but maintain a nearly 50 percent “Students served” number.
