Achieving the Dream Welcomes Largest-Ever Cohort of New Colleges

Achieving the Dream’s (ATD) largest-ever cohort of entering colleges met during two convenings in April and June to begin their work as ATD institutions. In Chicago and Cleveland, teams from 46 colleges, including 32 new tribal colleges and universities and two ATD Network colleges, collaborated with ATD leadership and data coaches, discussed how to build a culture of evidence, and planned first steps in their transformation process. Teams also played ATD’s updated Finish Line Game, a board game that doubles as a professional development tool to allow players to experience college as a student navigating the challenges of college policies, practices, and culture.

Achieving the Dream has become a catalyst for colleges to develop new, more effective approaches to student success. Through the Network, ATD will:

  • Innovate with the new cohort colleges to successfully implement, align, and scale cutting edge reforms that increase student success, close achievement gaps, and generate economic benefit for communities.
  • Coach the new college leaders to build institutional capacity, lead whole-college reform, and sustain continuous improvement.
  • Connect the colleges with a network of leaders to foster innovation and peer learning.

The foundation of ATD’s approach is a capacity-building framework and companion self-assessment tool that allow colleges to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement across seven institutional capacities such as leadership and vision, teaching and learning, and data and technology.  With the capacity framework as a guide, ATD’s approach integrates and aligns existing college success efforts and offers valuable support in preparing for accreditation, and fostering conversation about goals. ATD’s capacity framework also helps colleges implement bold, holistic changes across the entire institution.
