Zarina Durrani is the Human Resources Manager, supporting general HR functions. This includes recruiting, benefits and employee relations. She also supports the organization with various special projects.
Until 2013, Zarina was at the Brookings Institution, a global think tank in Washington, DC. For most of that time she was Director of HR, working with senior leadership to shape overall HR policies spanning a variety of areas. In her last two years she was Director of Diversity Initiatives, helping create structures and practices to attract and retain personnel from under-represented groups.
After leaving Brookings, she formed Meeting Common Goals, LLC, a firm providing consulting services in the areas of Human Resources and Diversity and Inclusion (D&I). Additionally, she is a Senior Consultant with the Winters Group, a firm which assists organizations in their efforts to create more equitable and inclusive environments. She also has worked with the Peace Corps helping to support their D&I initiatives.
Her volunteer activities include two terms as a commissioner on the Montgomery County (Maryland) Human Rights Commission and serving on the leadership team of the Global Access Pipeline (GAP), a consortium providing a pipeline for people from under-represented populations to achieve leadership positions in the international affairs arena. Currently she also serves on the board of the ALS Association of DC/MD/VA, an organization committed to finding a cure for Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Zarina received a B.A in History from Rutgers University, and an M.A. in Political Economy from the University of Maryland. While at Rutgers she spent a year at the University of Florence in Italy, and is conversant in Italian. She holds a Certificate in Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Management from Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies. She is also a qualified administrator of the IDI® (Intercultural Development Inventory®).
