Angela Dorn, J.D.

Angela Dorn, J.D., is Chief Operating Officer at Achieving the Dream, Inc. In this role, Angela works to develop and implement systems to strengthen ATD’s internal capacity as an organization. She engages in strategic planning, and implements systems to guide the organization as it executes new strategies for sustainability and success. In addition, Angela works with colleagues at ATD on board engagement and projects to improve engagement with Network colleges and other partners. Angela is currently working with organizational leadership on long-term strategic goals that cover many of areas of ATD’s work including organizational, operational, and financial sustainability, as well as better support services.

Angela comes to ATD after serving as Interim Executive Director to Public Allies New York (PANY). Public Allies is part of the U.S.’s national community service network, which also includes Americorps, VISTA, and Teach for America. PANY prepares underserved youth for jobs in non-profits and provides them with pathways for opportunity. For almost a decade before working with PANY Angela served as Founding Member and Chief Legal and Operating Officer of Single Stop, USA, a national non-profit that has helped over one million low-income households avoid or move out of poverty. The organization operated at locations including community colleges, food pantries, and charter schools, while raising awareness regarding the availability of public benefits and services.

Single Stop promotes the public’s use of Pell grants, the earned income tax credit, health care assistance, and nutrition assistance, for which many individuals and families did not realize they were eligible. A core component of Single Stop’s national strategy was to implement the program in U.S. community colleges. During Angela’s tenure at Single Stop, the organization operated in dozens of community colleges across 10 states. The financial resources which Single Stop provided to community college students had a demonstrated effect on student persistence and retention.

In her position at Single Stop, Angela managed a budget of approximately $27 million. She was intimately involved in developing and driving the organization’s national programmatic strategy. She guided long-range planning and developed “big picture” annual goals for the organization. Angela built Single Stop’s human resources department, built and helped to sustain relationships with philanthropic organizations including the Ford Foundation, Robin Hood Foundation, and Kresge Foundation, as well as the White House Office of Social Innovation. As CLO, Angela drove Single Stop’s successful efforts to purchase “mission critical” technology, developed the organization’s data and privacy policies, and oversaw risk management. She also oversaw the organization’s legal department, advised on all legal and risk management issues, and assisted in creating Single Stop’s Advisory Board.

Recognized by Essence magazine in August 2015 as a “Woman to Watch,” Angela contributes to national publications and serves on a number of boards, including the national board of directors of Public Allies and the NAACP Foundation.

Angela holds a doctorate of law from Harvard Law School and B.A. from Harvard College.
