The Cutting Edge Series: New Ways to Help Community Colleges Help Students Succeed

Achieving the Dream is resolute in our commitment to improve student outcomes and this series is designed to provide solutions to community colleges as they work to move the needle on student success and completion. In partnership with Public Agenda, Achieving the Dream commissioned the Cutting Edge Series to respond findings that community colleges are facing similar challenges, such as engaging faculty, scaling interventions, and building IR and IT capacity.

Cutting Edge Series #1: Engaging Adjunct and Full-Time Faculty in Student Success Innovation

This publication is a guide that helps colleges design and implement effective faculty engagement strategies on behalf of institutional change for student success. Working within the Achieving the Dream Five-Step Process for Increasing Student Success through Institutional Change, this report attaches a set of core principles for effective adjunct and full-time faculty engagement to each stage in the process. These principles are then considered more closely, and a set of concrete recommendations and practices is offered for implementing each principle.

Cutting Edge Series #2: Scaling Community College Interventions

This publication is the second in a three-part series of practical guides to address specific, common challenges community colleges face. The origin of this series is the recent interim report by MDRC and the Community College Research Center called “Turning the Tide: Five Years of Achieving the Dream in Community Colleges.” The interim report identified areas of great progress as well as aspects of Achieving the Dream’s work that need deeper focus.

Cutting Edge Series #3: Building Institutional Capacity for Data-Informed Decision Making

This publication is the third installment of the Cutting Edge series, which aims to help colleges engage faculty, scale successful interventions, and create a strong culture of evidence through use of data to strengthen their institutional change and student success efforts. Since data generation and use are at its core, Achieving the Dream has developed a range of materials to help colleges understand the basic roles of institutional research (IR) and information technology (IT) and how to align them with the student success mission at community colleges.
