The Student Financial Empowerment Project, funded by OneMain Financial, assists community colleges in the Achieving the Dream National Reform Network by integrating financial education into the college experience to help students become more financially secure.
Five Achieving the Dream institutions have been selected to receive $25,000 each for the purpose of establishing effective, sustainable financial empowerment programs. The selected institutions, with technical assistance from Achieving the Dream, have chosen financial empowerment strategies and will develop a work plan and outcome measures, implement the work plan, and assess the success of the project based on the established measures. The grantees are currently finalizing their work plans and preparing to launch their efforts, which are expected to begin this fall.
The five colleges selected through a rigorous application process to participate in the Student Financial Empowerment Project include:
Bakersfield College (CA)
St. Petersburg College (FL)
Triton College (IL)
Greenville Technical College (SC)
Alamo Colleges (TX)
As part of the Student Financial Empowerment Project, over a two-year period, the colleges will use their grants to carry out activities such as providing financial coaching, integrating financial literacy into student success courses and delivering financial planning and debt management workshops.
Achieving the Dream will disseminate promising practices and knowledge gained by the selected institutions through the development of a financial strategies toolkit at the conclusion of the initiative.
