Stout

Dr. Karen A. Stout is president and CEO emerita of Achieving the Dream (ATD), where she served as president and CEO from 2015 to 2026. During her tenure, she led one of the nation’s largest nonprofit organizations dedicated to community college transformation, expanding ATD’s Network to more than 300 colleges across 48 states and extending its work internationally through partnerships in South Africa. Under her leadership, ATD advanced a national agenda centered on student success, institutional capacity building, data-informed decision making, teaching and learning, economic mobility, and community impact. 

Today, Dr. Stout advises college leaders, foundations, and higher education organizations on leadership, institutional transformation, governance, student success, and the future of community colleges. She works with ATD as a leadership coach, serves as a facilitator in the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program’s fellowships for presidents, is an affiliated faculty member in the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education’s Executive Doctorate in Higher Education Management program, and serves as faculty and mentor in executive leadership programs throughout the country. 

A nationally recognized thought leader, Dr. Stout writes and speaks on the future of community colleges, leadership, student success, workforce and economic mobility, data and analytics, teaching and learning, digital transformation, governance, and community vibrancy. Her work focuses on helping institutions move more rapidly from research to practice while designing systems that improve outcomes for learners and communities. 

Her leadership has been recognized with numerous national honors, including the Robert Zemsky Medal from the University of Pennsylvania, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Leadership Award and induction into the AACC Hall of Fame, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education’s Diverse Champion Award, and the American Association of Women in Community Colleges Woman of the Year Award. She has also been recognized among Washingtonian magazine’s Most Influential People and EdTech’s Top Higher Education IT Influencers. She serves on numerous national advisory boards and previously served, following Senate confirmation, on the National Council on the Humanities. 

Before leading Achieving the Dream, Dr. Stout served for more than 14 years as president of Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania, where she led nationally recognized efforts to redesign the student experience and improve student success. The college distinguished itself as an ATD Leader College, earning the prestigious Leah Meyer Austin Award in 2014. In 2015, in recognition of her service to the college and community, the board of trustees granted her president emerita status and named the student success center on the Blue Bell Campus in her honor. 

Outside her dedication to advocating for community colleges, Dr. Stout is an accomplished athlete. In 2025 she was inducted into the Harford County (Maryland) Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2026 she was named to the USA Field Hockey Masters indoor and outdoor teams, representing the United States in international World Cup competitions in the United Kingdom and Belgium. 

Dr. Stout holds a Doctor of Education in educational leadership from the University of Delaware, an MBA from the University of Baltimore, and a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Delaware. She is a member of the University of Delaware’s Alumni Hall of Fame as well as the English Department’s Hall of Fame. She has received honorary doctorates from Miami Dade College, North Central State College, and Montgomery County Community College. 

How has education changed your life/your family?

Access to education, and the constant presence of the local community college, transformed what is possible for me and my family. My driving purpose — my “red thread” as I call it — is to make this possibility ubiquitous for all.
