Dr. Roderick S. Brown recently retired as an assistant vice president for academic affairs at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, an ATD Network institution and the nation’s largest, singly accredited statewide community college system. A native of Indianapolis, Dr. Brown began his career in higher education as a student affairs professional at Grinnell College and Harper College before transitioning to academic affairs as full-time English faculty at Martin University.

In 2003, Dr. Brown joined Ivy Tech as the department chair for liberal arts for the Richmond campus. Following a grant-funded position in Ivy Tech’s systems office as director of remediation and basic skill development, Dr. Brown returned to campus leadership at Ivy Tech—Central Indiana, first as dean for the Academic Advancement Division; later, as dean for the School of Arts, Sciences, and Education; and ultimately, as vice chancellor for academic affairs. Dr. Brown is a 2007 recipient of Ivy Tech’s President’s Award for Excellence in Instruction, a 2012 graduate of the Lakin Institute for Mentored Leadership, and a team chair in the Peer Corps for the Higher Learning Commission. In 2020, he was appointed to the American Association for Community College’s Commission on Structured Pathways. His professional passions include faculty and staff mentoring, diversity education, strategic planning, accreditation consulting, and leadership development. Rod is currently celebrating more than 30 years as an educator and considers higher education his life’s calling.
