During Community College Month, Achieving the Dream is spotlighting voices from its Leader Colleges and Leader Colleges of Distinction — exemplary institutions leading the way in advancing student success. Through a monthlong series organized around four themes, these stories highlight how progress happens at every level of an institution.

Through our Students Speak spotlights, we elevate student voices and the experiences that shape their paths forward. In this Q&A, we hear from Mehtabh Sahi, a nursing student at Forsyth Technical Community College (North Carolina) whose story reflects determination, purpose, and the power of believing in what’s possible. Drawn to community college as a pathway to a better future, she is working toward a career dedicated to caring for others during life’s most vulnerable moments — while building her own resilience along the way.

Q: What inspired you to attend your community college, and what are you hoping to achieve through your education?
A: Attending community college gave me hope at a time when I was trying to build a better future for myself. I chose this path because I wanted an education that was not only accessible but also meaningful and connected to my real goals. As a nursing student, I have a dream to one day care for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives and make a real difference through compassion, skill, and understanding. Community college showed me that success does not have to begin in one perfect place — it begins wherever you decide not to give up. Every class, every challenge, and every long night of studying has brought me closer to becoming the person I have always wanted to be.

Q: Is there a person, program, or experience at your college that has made a meaningful difference in your journey?
A: One of the most meaningful parts of my journey has been the support I have received from my instructors and the nursing program itself. Nursing school is not easy — it pushes you mentally, emotionally, and physically — but having people who believe in you makes all the difference. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed, exhausted, or unsure of myself, but the encouragement, guidance, and structure I found through my college helped me keep going. I have learned that success is not just about intelligence; it is also about resilience, discipline, and having a community that reminds you why you started. That support has meant more to me than words can fully explain.

“Community college showed me that success does not have to begin in one perfect place — it begins wherever you decide not to give up.”

Q: How has your college helped you see new possibilities for your future?
A: My college has helped me see that my future can be bigger than I once imagined. Before starting this journey, I had goals, but now I have confidence, direction, and a clearer vision of the life I want to build. Through my education, I have discovered strengths in myself that I did not fully recognize before — persistence, adaptability, and the ability to keep moving forward even when things feel difficult. It has shown me that I am capable of achieving things that once felt far away. More than anything, my college has helped me believe that my dreams are not just wishes — they are possible — and I am actively working toward them every day.

Q: How does your college make you feel like your voice matters?
A: My college makes me feel like my voice matters by creating opportunities for students like me to be seen, heard, and valued. I am reminded that my experiences, challenges, and goals are important. Community college students come from many different backgrounds and carry many different responsibilities, and I think there is something powerful about being in a place that recognizes those stories instead of overlooking them. For me, feeling heard means feeling encouraged to keep going, to keep growing, and to believe that what I am working toward truly matters. That kind of support can stay with a student for a lifetime.

“I have learned that success is not just about intelligence; it is also about resilience, discipline, and having a community that reminds you why you started.”

Q: What would you like people to better understand about the experiences and aspirations of community college students today?
A: I would want people to understand that community college students are some of the hardest-working, most determined people you will ever meet. Many of us are balancing school with jobs, family responsibilities, financial pressure, and personal struggles, all while trying to create a better future for ourselves. We are not taking an “easier” path — we are taking a brave and meaningful one. Behind every student is a story of sacrifice, resilience, and hope. Community college students are dreamers, caregivers, future professionals, and people who are working every day to turn challenges into opportunities. We are not just trying to earn a degree — we are trying to change our lives.
