Achieving the Dream Expands Emphasis on Policy, Economic Mobility with Addition of New Board Member

SILVER SPRING, MD (April 19, 2017) – Dr. Karen A. Stout, President and CEO of Achieving the Dream, today announced Dr. Mary Alice McCarthy, a policy leader at nationally recognized think tank New America, will join ATD’s Board of Directors. Dr. McCarthy’s expertise brings new policy depth to ATD, especially on issues concerning workforce development and economic mobility.

“I’m very pleased to welcome Dr. McCarthy, whose research on student success and the connections between academic outcomes, work and economic mobility are critical to our work at ATD,” said Dr. Stout. “With the support of our Network colleges, ATD is beginning to look beyond earning certificates and degrees as our goal to placement in jobs that offer family-sustaining wages and movement into the middle class.”

Dr. Mary Alice McCarthy is the founding director of New America’s Center on Education and Skills. She studies the intersection between higher education, workforce development and job training policies.  The Center, newly established in 2016, is focused on building learning-based pathways to economic opportunity that can begin inside or outside of formal higher education in order to broaden the spectrum of high quality educational options for students of all ages. Dr. McCarthy was previously Senior Policy Analyst in New America’s Education Policy Program. In that position, she conducted original research and analysis with particular emphasis on the role of federal education and training policy in strengthening connections between work and learning.  She also held positions in the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor.

Dr. McCarthy said, “Achieving the Dream has been breaking down barriers for American college students since it burst onto the scene in 2004. I am thrilled to join the effort and help colleges build even stronger connections for their students to economic opportunity and mobility.”

About New America

New America is a think tank and civic enterprise committed to renewing American politics, prosperity, and purpose in the Digital Age. We generate big ideas, bridge the gap between technology and policy, and curate broad public conversation. Structurally, we combine the best of a policy research institute, technology laboratory, public forum, media platform, and a venture capital fund for ideas. We are a distinctive community of thinkers, writers, researchers, technologists, and community activists who believe deeply in the possibility of American renewal.

Achieving the Dream, Inc. is a national nonprofit that is dedicated to helping more community college students, particularly low-income students and students of color, stay in school and earn a college certificate or degree. Evidence-based, student-centered, and built on the values of equity and excellence, Achieving the Dream is closing achievement gaps and accelerating student success nationwide by: 1) guiding evidence-based institutional improvement, 2) leading policy change, 3) generating knowledge, and 4) engaging the public. Conceived as an initiative in 2004 by Lumina Foundation and seven founding partner organizations, today, Achieving the Dream is leading the most comprehensive non-governmental reform network for student success in higher education history. With over 200 institutions, more than 100 coaches and advisors, and 15 state policy teams - working throughout 35 states and the District of Columbia – the Achieving the Dream National Reform Network helps more than 4 million community college students have a better chance of realizing greater economic opportunity and achieving their dreams.
