Gregory A. Haile joins Achieving the Dream as senior fellow

News & Updates
September 23, 2024

Dr. Karen A. Stout, president and CEO of Achieving the Dream (ATD), announced today that Gregory A. Haile, J.D., has joined ATD for a six-month appointment as a senior fellow.

“Greg Haile has a keen understanding of the work community colleges need to do to make our institutions more equitable and be drivers of social and economic mobility,” Dr. Stout said. “A well-respected practitioner leader, Haile will help elevate the reach and influence of ATD’s thought leadership and support the development and implementation of a new artificial intelligence (AI) strategy to enhance ATD’s programs, initiatives, and the transformation of network colleges.”

As a senior advisor, Haile will help ATD and its network institutions use AI ethically and effectively to more fully transform into student- and community-centered institutions and will bring additional expertise in understanding how ATD and communities can make a difference in equitable workforce development, including expanding equitable opportunity into AI-related careers

“Greg can help us understand what disaggregated data tell us when it comes to full employment and can help our colleges engage more deeply in strategies that will lead to employment opportunities for all,” Dr. Stout said.

“ATD is a courageous organization that embraces the challenges that come with serving those who need us most,” Haile said. “Over the past 20 years, ATD has changed the arc of how community colleges look at what serving racially minoritized and economically marginalized students look like. It is an incredible inspiration to be part of the organization and work with a remarkable staff and its forward-looking leadership team headed by Karen Stout.”

Currently, Haile is the deputy chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and is a senior fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School. His research is focused on economic mobility, engaging economically and otherwise marginalized communities to support our nation’s workforce needs, and artificial intelligence. He recently served on the U.S.-EU Talent for Growth Task Force (co-chaired by the U.S. secretary of commerce and the U.S. secretary of state), which worked to catalyze human capital in technology fields on both sides of the Atlantic.

Haile was Broward College’s president for five years (2018–2023) after serving as its general counsel and vice president of public policy and governmental affairs. During his tenure, Haile introduced the college’s innovative Broward UP model that made the college more accessible to disconnected learners by establishing college locations deep in underserved communities. He led the development of new partnerships with government agencies and community partners that served the same communities the college sought to reach, and he dramatically expanded student supports, including securing needs-based funding to help more working adults achieve a credential.

Broward was a top-ten finalist for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence during every eligible year of Haile’s leadership, and he was a finalist for the AACC’s CEO of the Year award. Broward College is a long-standing ATD Network institution and key participant in many of ATD’s research and development initiatives.

Haile was selected in 2021 to deliver the prestigious Dallas Herring Lecture at North Carolina State University’s College of Education’s Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research. The 2021 lecture, Redefining Access: the Power of Proximity, presents Haile’s innovative perspective on equitable access to community colleges.

Haile earned his juris doctorate from Columbia University and his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University.

While serving as senior fellow, Haile will take a sabbatical leave from his current position on the ATD Board of Directors.
