Sustaining Indigenous Culture: Using OER to Design Authentic Learning Experiences.

Achieving the Dream, with generous support from Every Learner Everywhere, is offering an exciting professional learning opportunity for faculty and staff at Tribal Colleges and Universities. The week of February 20th, 2023, ATD will launch the new 6-week online course Sustaining Indigenous Culture: Using Open Educational Resources (OER) to Design Authentic Learning Experiences. The course is free for TCU faculty and staff and runs from February – March 2023.

Who Should Register?

This course is designed for faculty, instructors, faculty developers, librarians, instructional designers, and other TCU academic support staff looking for strategies and best practices for designing student-centered courses using open educational resources. Participants will work alongside experienced facilitators and OER experts to learn how to find, evaluate, and adapt OER to use in their courses. They will also learn strategies for tailoring open content to create culturally affirming and sustaining learning experiences for students. Share course flyer with colleagues.

ATD staff delved into the OER course overview during the webinar and examined promising findings using OER materials and culturally responsive instruction. You will also learn the process for earning a digital badge upon program completion and see samples of the course mapping.

Course Description

This course is designed specifically for TCU faculty, faculty developers, librarians, instructional designers, and other academic support staff looking for a foundational understanding of OER adoption and use and online course design.

Participants will work alongside experienced facilitators and OER experts to gain hands-on experience:

  • finding, evaluating, and adapting OER to use in a online and face-to-face course
  • using student-centered strategies for tailoring their open content to create culturally affirming and sustaining learning experiences for students
  • developing an action plan for integrating OER into a course

Course Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate how to locate, evaluate, and accurately attribute open course content aligned to course learning objectives that supports students in completing course activities and assessments.
  2. Use the backwards design planning framework to align course learning outcomes with assessments, learning activities, and openly licensed content.
  3. Design authentic assessments and “renewable” assignments that offer opportunities for students to demonstrate acquisition of course skills and knowledge.
  4. Plan learning experiences that employ open and culturally affirming teaching practices that create community, foster interaction, and promote active learning.
  5. Discover resources, groups, and learning events that make up the open education community and the role it plays in supporting and sustaining OER
